You are your product!
Many people are realizing there are certain myths surrounding jobs. Myths like security, fitting in, and hard work. We use to have to convince people about not having job security but that’s in the past. Only a few very lucky and very sheltered employee now believe that myth. In fact, the question now is about jobs coming back and if there’s a new normal.
When it comes to promoting products we use words like differentiating because our product is different and better than our competition. When we talk about employment we talk about fitting in and not making waves. Why? If you are the product don’t you need to differentiate yourself? Don’t you need to stand out? If the Chairman of the Board sees you as a flunky (even though your title is Senior VP) don’t you have an identity problem?
Working hard but not smart?
Most of us believe in hard work but hard work is not the same as success. We can work hard for a boss that takes the credit for our work. Or, we can work hard for a great boss that gets fired or killed in a car crash. Suddenly we find ourselves working for a serious AH. The economy turns down and, even though we work hard, we receive a notice that our job has been eliminated.
I remember working for a giant oil company and we got to watch a video one morning from the CEO regarding a merger that would eliminate our part of the company. Later we learned that our CEO was made personally wealthy from the merger. Our company was bought by BP.
