Get motivated? Motivation isn’t a cause–it’s an effect.
What causes motivation? Goals. Big goals!
While we can break big goals down into their doable parts we often don’t get motivated unless the goal is big. Just the thought of achieving a particular goal causes us to act. We feel really good when we think about achieving this goal.
When we have big goals we don’t have trouble getting out of bed and get going because the goal is driving our actions. Also, many of the actions we take are unconscious actions because they become habitual. The goal of going to the gym to get physically fit can become a “habit.” Focus is not a cause either. Focus becomes a habit because we know where we are going and we have a big goal. Many habits are unconscious because we do them every day. We don’t get to work and say: “Wow, I’m naked! I forgot to put my clothes on this morning.” We don’t make those kinds of mistakes because they are a habit.
Enjoy the journey. You are on the court playing tennis with a toddler that can’t return the ball. Perhaps you enjoy teaching but is the game any fun?
Now you’re on the court with a pro and can barely return the ball. You hit the ball with tremendous top spin and then curve the ball to the back court line winning the point. You don’t win the match but did you enjoy the game? Most of your life will be on the court. What’s the level of your game?
When we find the “why” the “how” will come!
What should we do today that changes the future?
