Unsolicited Advise

Unsolicited advise can damage your business.

Many of us are very direct.  Sometimes we should trade places with the person we advise and ask ourselves if we would appreciate the directness and the advise.

Some have a “think we known” and “we are right and they are wrong” mentality.  And so, may be too quick to advise.  People get very annoyed with this type of person.  They are thinking:  “I wasn’t born yesterday and you’re not the only adult in the room.”  Often our advise (even though given through a caring spirit) comes across as talking down.  We didn’t like it as a child and we don’t like it as an adult.

Avoid stepping into a conversation that someone else is having and give advise because we know the answer.

When someone ask for advise it might be a good idea to find out first what they think about the issue.  What do you think?  Avoid being emphatic with your response and leave the personal “you” out of the response.  Many of us have a picture of the right way to respond or wrong way to respond.  If not, we should focus on understanding how people react to us.

Never lose sight of the fact that we can give strong advise (just has to be right because we know) that is wrong!

If you are the kid that always had your hand up first in class, because you always know the answer, begin to question your ego and motives for being a know it all.
