Peyton Place

Does character matter?

When it comes to moral issues we often view others in society (Home, Work, Church, etc.) as our example.

Those of us who have worked a long time in business can go on an on with examples of immorality.  Of course, everyone has a story or two even about themselves because we are all sinners.  I recall the secretary of a VP, at a major company, telling me that his wife called her to find out where he was.  His Secretary didn’t tell her that he had been with his “special friend” on a business trip for several days.  Another person mentioned that this VP had a Director and his wife called to find out where he was.  The person answering didn’t understand the situation and advised her that he was at the hospital with his wife having their baby.  Of course, his girl friend was having his child and not his wife who was setting at home wondering where her husband was.  The divorces and relationships in that one big company defied belief.

The question is:  Where does immorality stop and morality begin? If a person will cheat on their spouse and kids what else might they do?  Will they also lie, cheat, steal, and kill? When it comes to religious organizations we find it no different.  At this moment I know of a minister that just got married to a woman with a young daughter.  On face book the previous husband was describing how much he loved the wife he lost.  The majority of the church members of course are well wishers for the new couple (including the preachers many of which endorsed and heartily approved his new relationship).  These same people are really strict on issues that don’t matter much.  The Apostle Paul told the Corinthians:  “For I would that all men were even as I myself.”  Single?  Of course, he was a man of character and his mission was important.  How wonderful is the example of this newly wed standing in front of the kids in Sunday morning service with his brand new wife and daughter (lowering the leadership example bar)? Of course, the former husband is heart-broken so his testimony would be a downer regarding this new marriage made in heaven.

Sometimes people wonder about the times we live in and character of people. I don’t because it is all about example. Unfortunately, stories like Peyton Place can’t even begin to mirror the strange realities of real life.
