Staying Informed

Life is a continual learning process.

I was listening to a video and it reminded me of many of the pundits we listen to concerning world events–those presenting themselves as informed experts on every subject.  When you listen to what they say it is obvious they really know nothing about the subject but are not willing to admit ignorance.  And so, what they should be saying is I will suspend judgment until after I’ve informed myself or researched the issues.

The guest on this national talk show was asked this question after mentioning that he disagreed with a person on a subject:  “Have you studied or researched this subject?”  His response was:  “No, but I will be happy to do so for a consulting fee because that is how I work as an expert consultant.”

I quote a comment regarding his response:  “That means you’re ignorant, naïve, and for sale to the highest bidder.”

I agree very much with that comment even though it is ad hominem (most all of us use ad hominem). When we are uninformed we should say so and not respond with personal attacks to confirm our ignorance. Many people are not well-educated but see through ignorant responses for what they are:  Insults against a person with an opposing viewpoint instead of informed facts.

Stay informed if you present yourself as an expert.
