It’s OK to think outside of the box (part of the creative process) but…
How many times have you come up with what you thought was a good idea and your spouse or respected critic goes: “Gag!”
Part of the creative process is evaluation because there comes a time when our open mind has to be closed and a decision made. What is a key to this evaluation process?
What do customers or other consumers of your ideas think?
We always have to take into consideration those who benefit from our efforts. Sometimes critics are wrong but not always. Question: “Is our decision so important that we can’t change and move in another direction?”
Many of us have experienced the brilliant engineered product that “just won’t sell.” Don’t be afraid to go in another direction.
Often there are strong indicators that our idea will fall flat but we choose to ignore these indicators. The other day I was wearing a product designed by someone with a “good idea” only to be told: “How Dorky is that?”
Don’t be too bull-headed and ignore your customers!
