If people don’t understand you, or your products, they may not buy.
Using language we are very familiar with sometimes causes us to be overly complex for our audience. Somehow we must simplify our message. They may suggest that they understand the message but they really don’t.
Many people like to use a Powerpoint presentation because it is visual and today people are visual. However, this is often a crutch for the presenter and meaningless or boring to the audience. Also, if we put more than three points on the slide we’ve just lost the audience. Studies have shown that people often don’t retain much information. We are better off with just a few powerful points on each slide because attention spans are very short.
Less is More.
Lastly, we are presenting information that’s not important to the audience. For example, we may tell them about our workouts at XYZ gym. Are we promoting XYZ gym or our products? Or, we may be telling them about some executive in our company like the founder. I remember a prospect saying latter after a presentation: “Who’s this xxx he keeps talking about and why should I care?” We must make the information applicable and important to the audience.
Use the KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid) and stay on message. Why should “I” be interested in your products?
