Wagering Your Soul

Wagering your soul because you don’t have the facts?

This is not about taking action on an “educated” guess, intuition, and/or skill.  A professional tennis player doesn’t consider the basics of their next swing.  Though practice they have already mentally prepared for the game a thousand times.  If the tennis player has to think about their swing during the game they are in trouble.

This is about the misguided trust we may have in self and in others. Have you ever seen someone lose their job, or even career, because they were 180° off due to a lack of facts (having the wrong so-called facts)?  Have you ever read in history about a great nation going down because of a lack of facts?  People willing to bet everything on inaccurate knowledge.

This may occur because people aren’t willing to even consider the facts. Take for example a man or woman that won’t examine the fact that their spouse is never home, has a separate bank account, etc.  Perhaps they can’t face the fact that their spouse is cheating on them.  There are some things people just don’t want to know.

There are so-called truths that just aren’t true. Take the “Efficient Market Theory” espoused by many scholarly economist until recently (Proponents of the efficient market theory believe that there is perfect information in the stock market).  This widely believed economic theory appears to be false.

People often believe various truths because “their” so-called experts believe it.  I believe such-and-such because so-and-so believes that and I know they can’t be wrong.  Really? Don’t bet your soul on it!

When it comes to the important things in life try to have an open mind and try to ascertain the facts. The facts may surprise you and you may even make better decisions.
